Introduction[]

Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) is an international publicly-accessibly database that registers microarray, sequencing, and other high-throughput functional genomics data. It was created in response to the growing need for a public domain with the ability to store and acesss high-throughput gene expression data. About 90% of the data contained in this GEO are gene expression studies that look at a broad range of biological topics, such as evolution, immune systems, ecology, and diseases. GEO also contains non-expression data that represents other categories such as chromatin structure and genome-protein interactions.

There are three main purposes of this database. The first is to store a large amount of high-throughput functional genomic data. The second is to assist in the submission of genomic data to this database. The third and final purpose is to allow simplicify of access for the public. This GEO has a flexible and open design that facilitates all of the goals. There are 5 different typesoff content in the GEO: platforms, series, samples, datasets, and profiles. Platforms describe the physical setup of an assay and are supplied by submitters. The samples are individual array measurements and are also supplied by submitters. The series are sets of samples. The datasets are collections of biologically and statistically comparable GEO Samples that are put together by GEO curators. Profiles contain the expression of individual genes in a dataset. To locate data relevent to a particular interest, you could use either the datasets or the profiles.
